In 1978 when administrative functions were moved to Sri Jayawardanapura Kotte. Colombo was designated as the commercial capital of Sri Lanka.

The national museum of Colombo, was established 01st January 1877 during the tenure of the British colonial governor Sri William Henry Gregory is situated in cinnamon gardens Colombo 07. This is the oldest museum in Sri Lanka. The plan of the museum was made by the government architect Mr. James g. Smither and he designed the plan in Italian Architectural style.

One of the main highlights of museum of Colombo would be the golden thorn of the king Sri Wikkrama Rajasinha in Kandy, which is a majestic piece of work that includes gems and intricate design. The museum also boasts it's fine library collection which is home to over half of million books , nearly 4000 palm manuscripts as well as a gallery filled with fine paintings of Sri Lanka over the ages.


Kelani Viharaya

Lord Buddha on the 08th year after enlightenment on full moon day Vesak, visited Kelaniya on the invitation of the Naga king of Kelaniya , seated on the gem throne the blessed one preached the doctrine. The gem studded throne is enshrined in the dagaba. This Vihara was built by king Yatalatissa. Height of the Stupa is 80ft , circumference 180ft. The Dagaba is in the shape of a heap of paddy. In the temple premises are Devales dedicated to gods Kataragama, Vishnu, Natha and Vibhishana.

Portuguese set fire to the temple and destroyed it. Kelani Vihara is one of the 16 sacred shrines in the island. Duruthu Perahera is conducted in the month of January with pomp and glory.

Gangaramaya is one of Colombo's most important temple, established during 19th century. It's not merely a temple but a centre for vocational training. The temple was founded by venerable Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala nayaka thera and his pupil Deundara Sri Jinaratana nayaka thera converted small to the large structure in today. The temple's design has been influenced by the architectural features of Sri Lanka, Thailand, India and China. In this temple also a recognized learning centre within it's compound a residential hall, museum and education rooms as well as huge collection of Buddha souvenirs, precious artwork, carvings, statues and gifts from devotees around the world.

Viharamahadevi Park

The park was built during the British rule of Sri Lanka and was originally named 'Victoria park' after queen Victoria. It has been renamed after the mother of king Dutugamunu, Viharamahadevi, of whom there is large statue. The Viharamahadevi public park is located in Colombo, next to the national museum of the Colombo. The park features include a huge Buddha statue and a series of water fountains. Also includes a mini zoo, and children s play area.
